CNN's sensationalist reporting? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 25 May 2008
After reading a Columbia-related article on CNN.com, I sent them the following letter:
I am deeply disappointed by the sensationalist reporting found in the article entitled "NASA memo warns of 'potential for large damage'". If one reads only the headline and the first paragraph at a glance, it would seem that there has been a major revelation, a coverup, a scandal, or at best an embarassing and fatal mistake on the part of NASA officials. After reading the rest of the article, and the actual memo, however, it quickly becomes apparent that this is not the case. While it may have warned of the potential for large damage, it also immediately declared that such an event would have no mission impact and cause no concern for the safety of crew and vehicle. A more appropriate and responsible headline would be "NASA memo: potential for large damage, but no safety hazard".

If you agree, I suggest you do the same.
